WORKING TOGETHER

Establishing Goals

“We want our record to sound professional. Our past releases have been substandard.”

“We want to make something raw—our last album was too polished.”

“We never sound on our records how we sound live: we want to capture that energy.”

“Our record shouldn’t just sound like we do when we perform...we want to make a work of ART.”

I facilitate your journey.

Mixing & Mastering

BookShare filesReviseRelease

When you book, you’ll arrive at a confirmation page with instructions for preparing and uploading your files. Once I’ve received everything, we’ll schedule your project and get started.

I approach mixing as an opportunity to strengthen the emotional impact of the record, while preserving what makes it yours. It’s not just a finishing step or technical procedure. It’s storytelling.

Your master is the final feeling of your music. It’s your product, but it’s your audience’s experience. That connection between you and them is what I work to capture.

What Clients Say

We’ve done multiple records with Kahan and have worked in every capacity together—from development through tracking and mixing, and from opposite sides of the Atlantic as well as coming over from London to record with him in New York. Kahan is honest and cares deeply about the music he works on. He’s versatile, attentive to detail, and mind-blowingly creative. His supplementary soundscapes and arrangements for strings and choir have played a hugely important role in the evolution of our songs. An incredibly knowledgeable and hard-working music producer, Kahan will open up doors you didn’t know were there.

—Jingo

Kahan's well of musical knowledge is deep. He has a preternatural grasp on the elements necessary to build and refine any style of song. Writing, production, mixing, performance—he has both the technical and emotional ends covered. In the studio he's calm, objective, and enthusiastic. Opinionated and communicative without being pushy. He's very tall and symmetrical. He can also be a right goofball, which is an indispensable quality in any professional.

—Not Blood Paint

I made the best record I’ve ever made, because of Kahan. He listened to my songs, to my feelings, and to my stories with great detail. He helped guide me to my own answers.

—Dru Cutler

Working with Kahan was a unique process I hope more people get to experience. Besides being an extremely knowledgeable engineer, Kahan understands the complexities of emotion and sound and how they work together to create powerful narratives. He brought my vocals to life, something I didn't expect out of a standard recording session. His understanding of the technical aspects of sound and how to capture certain qualities within recording is one of his unique abilities I haven't experienced with other producers and engineers. By the time we finished our sessions I felt like I understood so much more about my own music and the meaning behind it. A rare gem in the music industry. I would highly recommend Kahan!

—Mona

Kahan James is a goddamn magician with an incredible arsenal of gear and instruments, and words can’t express the depth of creativity and devotion he brings to his projects. He’s an excellent communicator and an enviable talent, and I can’t wait to work with him again.

—Laura Martin

Most people—even most musicians—simply do not understand how important music producers are to the artist's work; but producers really are essential. A really good music producer not only guides the artist through the process of making a record, but also helps to unlock exciting new possibilities for the artist in a way that carries on long after the producer's work is done. That's what Kahan James did for me.
